Handyman job cost calculator for Estimate vs. Actual review
Estimating asks what a job is expected to cost before the work begins. Actual job costing looks back at the completed work and compares those assumptions with the labor-hours, material cost, job expenses, allocated overhead, and revenue that actually occurred. That comparison can show whether a job changed because labor ran long, materials cost more, revenue changed, or several categories moved at once.
This handyman job costing calculator is built for that post-job review. It does not suggest a new selling price or target margin. Instead, it keeps the completed job result beside the original estimate so a small handyman crew can use real job history to improve future estimates.
Handyman actual job cost calculator FAQ
What is actual job costing for a handyman job?
Actual job costing totals the labor and other costs recorded for a completed job, then compares those results with the estimate or quote when that reference is available.
Why compare estimated vs. actual job costs?
The comparison shows where the completed job differed from the assumptions used before the work started. Repeated labor-hour, material, or job-cost variances can help you review the inputs you use on future estimates.
Can I load my saved Handyman Estimate?
Yes. A usable estimate saved in this browser can load basic job details and a snapshot of estimated labor-hours, labor cost, materials, other direct costs, allocated overhead, total job cost, quoted price, and estimated job profit. Material line items are not copied into the actual review.
Should sales tax be included in final job revenue?
For this calculator, enter final job revenue before sales tax. This keeps collected sales tax outside the job revenue used in the profit and margin calculation. Use the final revenue amount after approved job-price changes and credits.
Why is the final job revenue different from the original quoted price?
The final amount can change because of approved change orders, credits, or other pricing changes. The calculator shows the difference, but it does not assume that every revenue difference is an estimating error.
Is actual job profit the same as company net profit?
No. Actual job profit here is final job revenue minus the job costs you entered, including any allocated overhead you chose to assign. Business expenses, financing, taxes, warranty costs, or other costs not entered here can still affect what the company ultimately keeps.
What happens if final job revenue is $0?
The calculator can still show actual total job cost and job profit, but job margin is not calculated because there is no positive revenue denominator.
