How to build an exterior painting estimate
- Measure the exterior surfaces you plan to paint or stain. Break the project into elevations or surface types when that makes the scope easier to estimate.
- Estimate painter-hours for siding, trim, fascia, soffits, doors, shutters, prep, cleaning, caulking, or other exterior work. Use the Painting Labor Hours Estimator if you want to work from square footage and production rates.
- Enter your labor cost per painter-hour and add exterior paint or stain, primer, caulk, and other materials at the costs you expect to pay.
- Add lift, scaffolding, access, travel, delivery, cleanup, other direct costs, and any overhead you want allocated to the job.
- Set your target gross margin, optional minimum job price, and optional upward price rounding to calculate a suggested job price.

Can I break labor out by elevation or surface?
Yes. Add separate labor items for front, rear, or side elevations, siding, fascia, soffits, shutters, doors, railings, prep, cleaning, caulking, spot priming, or other exterior work.
How should I account for height and access?
Build the extra labor into your painter-hour estimate and add lift, scaffolding, staging, or other access costs in the job-cost section. This calculator does not decide which access method is appropriate for a specific job.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Gross margin is gross profit divided by selling price. Markup is profit divided by cost. This calculator asks for target gross margin and uses price = cost ÷ (1 − margin).
Does this calculator include sales tax or permit fees?
No. Tax and permit requirements vary by location and project. Add any applicable taxes, fees, or other required costs separately if they belong in your quote or business process.
Does this tool provide average exterior painting prices?
