How to build an interior painting estimate

- Estimate painter-hours for walls, ceilings, trim, doors, closets, prep, or other interior work. Use the Painting Labor Hours Estimator if you want to work from square footage and production rates.
- Enter your labor cost per painter-hour and add paint, primer, and other materials at the costs you expect to pay.
- Add equipment, delivery, other direct costs, and any overhead you want allocated to the job.
- Set your target gross margin, optional minimum job price, and optional upward price rounding to calculate a suggested job price.

What should I include in an interior painting estimate?

Can I break labor out by room or surface?
Yes. Add separate labor items for living room walls, ceilings, trim, doors, closets, prep, repairs, or other interior work. The room or area field is optional, but it can make the estimate easier to review.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Gross margin is gross profit divided by selling price. Markup is profit divided by cost. This calculator asks for target gross margin and uses price = cost ÷ (1 − margin).
Does this calculator include sales tax?
No. Tax rules vary by location and transaction. Add any tax or other required fees separately if they apply to your quote or business.
Does this tool provide average interior painting prices?
No. It intentionally avoids built-in market prices. Use your own painter-hours, labor cost, material costs, overhead, minimum price, and target margin.
