Free painting labor estimator
Painting Labor Hours Estimator
Estimate painter-hours and crew time from paintable square footage, coat counts, and your own production rates. Add prep, masking, repairs, detail work, or cleanup as additional painter-hours without relying on built-in industry rates.
Estimate painting labor from your own production rates
Each work item uses square footage × coats ÷ production rate. Enter the production rate you plan to use for each work item. No default rate is inserted.
1. Project & crew
Crew size converts total painter-hours into estimated elapsed crew time.
Number of painters working on the job.
2. Area-based painting work
Add walls, ceilings, doors, panels, or other surfaces as separate work items when they use different coat counts or production rates.
3. Additional labor
Add labor that is not already captured by the area-based production-rate rows.
Examples: masking, patching, sanding, repairs, detail work, setup, or cleanup. Enter total worker-hours, not elapsed crew hours.
4. Estimated labor time
Blank work items are ignored. Any work item you start must be complete and valid before project totals are shown.
Your project inputs and labor assumptions are processed in your browser and aren't sent to us.
Planning estimate only. Production rates can change with surface condition, prep requirements, application method, access, color changes, detail work, crew experience, drying or staging constraints, and other jobsite conditions. Estimated crew time assumes the entered painter-hours can be distributed across the crew; some tasks cannot be performed in parallel.
How to estimate painting labor hours
- Start with paintable square footage for each surface or work area. Use the Wall & Ceiling Area Calculator if you need to measure multiple rooms first.
- Enter the number of coats planned for each work item.
- Enter your own production rate in square feet per painter-hour per coat.
- Add painter-hours for prep, masking, repairs, detail work, setup, cleanup, or other labor not included in the production-rate rows.
- Set crew size to convert total painter-hours into estimated elapsed crew time.
Painting labor formulas
surface area × coatscoating area ÷ production ratecoating painter-hours + additional painter-hourstotal painter-hours ÷ crew sizeA painter-hour is one painter working for one hour. For example, 12 painter-hours could be about 6 hours for a two-person crew if the work can be divided evenly. Real elapsed time can be longer when tasks must happen in sequence.
Painting labor estimator FAQ
What is a painter-hour?
A painter-hour is one hour of labor from one painter. Two painters working for three hours equals six painter-hours.
What production rate should I use?
Use a production rate that fits your crew, surface, application method, and job conditions. This tool intentionally does not supply a universal square-feet-per-hour rate because real production can vary widely.
Does the production rate include multiple coats?
No. Enter a per-coat production rate. The calculator multiplies surface area by the number of coats before dividing by the entered production rate.
Where do prep and masking hours go?
Use Additional painter-hours for prep, masking, patching, sanding, repairs, detail work, setup, cleanup, or other labor that is not already reflected in your production-rate rows.
How is crew time different from painter-hours?
Painter-hours measure total labor. Estimated crew time divides total painter-hours by crew size. That crew-time result assumes work can be shared across the crew and should be treated as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed finish time.
Can I use wall and ceiling square footage from another tool?
Yes. Use the Wall & Ceiling Area Calculator to calculate room-by-room surface area, then enter the relevant square footage here with your planned coats and production rates.
