Sod Calculator

Calculate how much sod a lawn or landscaping job needs in square feet and square yards. Add multiple areas, include your own extra-material percentage, and optionally estimate pieces or rolls, pallets, and material cost using your supplier's coverage and pricing.

Calculate how much sod you need

Measure the installation areas first, then add supplier-specific coverage and pricing only if you need unit, pallet, or cost estimates.

1. Sod installation areas

Use simple shapes or enter a known area in square feet. Add separate sections for front lawns, backyards, side yards, strips, or other sod areas.

2. Extra sod

Add your own buffer for trimming, cuts, damaged pieces, measurement uncertainty, or other job conditions.

%

No extra percentage is added unless you enter one.

Sod area to order: total installation area × (1 + extra material %).

3. Supplier coverage and pricing

Sod sizes and pallet coverage vary by supplier and region, so these fields are optional. Enter the actual coverage and price from the product or supplier you plan to use.

sq ft

Enter the square footage covered by one piece or roll.

sq ft

Use the supplier's stated square-foot coverage per pallet.

$

Used to estimate cost from the total sod square footage.

$

Requires coverage per piece / roll to calculate a unit-based cost.

$

Requires coverage per pallet. Whole pallets are rounded up.

4. Sod quantity

Square-foot and square-yard results need only complete area measurements. Unit, pallet, and cost results appear when the matching supplier inputs are available.

Measured installation area Combined area before extra material
Sod area to order Includes the extra-material percentage you entered
Square yards Adjusted sod area converted from square feet
Pieces / rolls needed Enter coverage per piece / roll to calculate
Pallets needed Enter coverage per pallet to calculate
Estimated material cost Enter supplier pricing to estimate material cost

Add at least one complete sod area to calculate the square footage to order.

Your measurements and pricing inputs are processed in your browser and aren't sent to us.

Material estimate only. Sod dimensions, pallet coverage, supplier minimums, delivery fees, tax, product availability, cutting waste, site preparation, and installation conditions vary. Confirm product coverage and ordering details with your supplier before purchasing.

How to calculate how much sod you need

  1. Add each area that will receive sod. For irregular lawns, divide the installation area into simpler shapes or enter a known square-foot measurement.
  2. Add an extra-material percentage only if you want a buffer for cuts, trimming, damage, or measurement uncertainty.
  3. Use the adjusted square footage as the main sod quantity to order.
  4. If your supplier gives coverage per piece, roll, or pallet, enter those values to estimate whole units or whole pallets.
  5. Add optional supplier pricing to compare material-cost estimates before delivery, tax, or other fees.

Sod calculator formula

The calculator first totals the measured installation area, applies any extra-material percentage you enter, and then converts that adjusted area into square yards, pieces or rolls, and pallets when supplier coverage is available.

Sod area to ordermeasured sq ft × (1 + extra %)

Pieces / rollsceil(adjusted sq ft ÷ coverage per unit)
Palletsceil(adjusted sq ft ÷ coverage per pallet)

Sod square footage calculator for lawns and landscaping jobs

If you are asking “how much sod do I need?”, start with the square footage of the area that will actually receive sod. This sod calculator combines multiple sections, adds an optional material buffer, and gives you the adjusted sod square footage and square yards to order.

If your supplier sells sod by the piece, roll, or pallet, you can also enter the supplier's actual coverage to estimate whole units. Because sod sizes and pallet coverage vary, the calculator does not assume a universal roll size or pallet size.

Sod calculator FAQ

How many square feet of sod do I need?

Measure the areas that will receive sod and add them together. The calculator shows the measured square footage and the adjusted square footage after any extra-material percentage you enter.

How many pallets of sod do I need?

Enter the square-foot coverage per pallet from your supplier. The calculator divides the adjusted sod area by that coverage and rounds up to a whole pallet.

How many pieces or rolls of sod do I need?

Enter the coverage per piece or roll from the product or supplier. The calculator divides the adjusted sod area by that coverage and rounds up to a whole unit.

Should I add extra sod for waste?

That depends on the project. The extra-material field is optional so you can apply your own buffer for trimming, cuts, damaged pieces, or measurement uncertainty instead of relying on a built-in percentage.

Does one pallet of sod always cover the same area?

No. Pallet coverage can vary by sod type, supplier, region, and how the sod is cut or packaged. Use the coverage stated by the supplier you plan to order from.

Does the estimated cost include delivery or installation?

No. The optional cost estimates use only the material prices you enter. Delivery, tax, installation labor, site preparation, equipment, disposal, and other charges are not added automatically.
