Mulch Calculator
Calculate how much mulch a landscape job needs in cubic yards, cubic feet, and bags. Add multiple beds, enter the mulch depth you plan to install, include extra material if needed, and compare optional bagged and bulk material costs.
Calculate how much mulch you need
Measure each bed, enter the mulch depth to add, and choose how you plan to buy the material.
1. Landscape beds
Use simple shapes or enter a known area in square feet. Add more sections for separate beds, islands, or tree rings.
2. Mulch depth and extra material
Enter the actual depth of new mulch you plan to add. If existing mulch stays in place, enter only the additional depth needed for this job.
Use the depth specified for this job.
Add your own buffer for uneven beds, settling, spillage, or other job conditions.
3. Buying options
Use your actual bag size and supplier pricing. Leave price fields blank if you only need material quantities.
Enter the package volume only if you want a whole-bag count or bagged material cost.
Used only to estimate bagged material cost.
Enter material price only. Delivery, tax, and other charges are not added automatically.
Choose the order increment your supplier uses, or leave exact volume unrounded.
4. Mulch quantity
Results update when all required inputs and bed sections are complete.
Add at least one complete bed and enter the mulch depth to calculate material quantity.
Your measurements and pricing inputs are processed in your browser and aren't sent to us.
Material estimate only. Actual order quantity can vary with bed shape, measurement accuracy, existing material, settling, compaction, supplier increments, product size, delivery requirements, and site conditions. Check the product package or supplier details before ordering.
How to calculate how much mulch you need
- Add each landscape bed and choose a shape that matches the area you measured. For irregular beds, divide the area into simpler sections.
- Enter the mulch depth you plan to add in inches.
- If you want a material buffer, enter your own extra-material percentage.
- Enter the bag size if you are buying bagged mulch, or choose a bulk-order rounding increment if your supplier sells by set cubic-yard increments.
- Add optional prices to compare the estimated bagged and bulk material cost before delivery, tax, or other charges.
Mulch calculator formula
The calculator converts landscape bed area and mulch depth into volume, then converts that volume into cubic yards and whole bags.
area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12cubic feet ÷ 27base volume × (1 + extra %)ceil(cubic feet ÷ bag size)Mulch calculator for cubic yards, bags, and landscape jobs
If you are asking “how much mulch do I need?”, the key inputs are the bed area and the depth of mulch you plan to add. This mulch calculator converts those measurements into cubic feet and cubic yards, then calculates how many bags you need based on the package size you enter.
For landscaping crews, multiple-bed entry makes it easier to combine foundation beds, islands, borders, and tree rings into one material total. Optional pricing also gives you a quick material-cost reference before you build a larger landscaping estimate.
Mulch calculator FAQ
How many cubic yards of mulch do I need?
Enter the total landscape bed area and the depth you plan to add. The calculator converts the resulting cubic feet into cubic yards automatically.
Can I calculate several landscape beds at once?
Yes. Add separate bed sections and combine rectangles, circles, triangles, or areas you already know in square feet.
How does the bag count work?
The calculator divides the required cubic feet by the bag size you enter and rounds up to a whole bag. Check the package because bag volume varies by product.
Should I add extra mulch?
That depends on the job. The extra-material field is optional so you can apply your own buffer for uneven beds, settling, spillage, or other conditions instead of relying on a built-in percentage.
Does the cost comparison include delivery or tax?
No. Bagged and bulk cost estimates use only the prices you enter. Delivery, tax, minimum orders, fees, and other supplier charges are not added automatically.
Can I use a known square-foot area instead of length and width?
Yes. Choose Total area for a bed section and enter the square footage directly.
