Calculate lawn area

Break an irregular lawn into simple shapes, enter the measurements in feet, and include or subtract each section from the total.

Lawn sections

Name sections if helpful, choose whether each area should be included or subtracted, and add as many sections as you need.

Total lawn area

Included areas minus any subtracted areas. Incomplete sections must be finished before the result can be copied or printed.

Total square feet0 sq ftPrimary measurement for lawn and landscape estimating.
Total square yards0 sq yd1 square yard = 9 square feet.
Total acres0 acres1 acre = 43,560 square feet.

Enter at least one lawn section to calculate the total area.

Your measurements are processed in your browser and aren't sent to us.

Tip: for an irregular yard, divide the lawn into smaller rectangles, squares, circles, or triangles and add each section separately. Use field measurements that match the actual mowable or landscaped area you want to estimate.

How to calculate lawn area

  1. Optionally name the section, such as Front lawn, Back yard, House, or Driveway.
  2. Choose Include area for lawn or landscape sections you want counted, or Subtract area for measured areas you want removed from the total.
  3. Choose the shape and enter the required dimensions in feet.
  4. Select + Add Area for additional sections.
  5. Use the combined square footage for later mowing time, pricing, sod, soil, or other estimating steps.

Triangle(base × height) ÷ 2

How accurate should the measurement be?

The calculator only uses the dimensions you enter. For quick mowing estimates, field measurements or reliable property measurements may be enough. For material purchases or jobs where small errors become expensive, measure more carefully. You can leave non-job areas out or measure them separately and mark them as Subtract area.

Lawn area calculator FAQ

Can I calculate an irregular lawn?

Yes. Divide it into several simple sections, then include or subtract each section as needed to build the combined total.

What units does this calculator use?

Enter linear dimensions in feet. The result is automatically shown in square feet, square yards, and acres.

Should I include the house, driveway, or garden beds?

Only include the area relevant to the job you are estimating. You can leave non-job areas out, or measure them and choose Subtract area to remove them from the total.

Is lawn area the same as lawn square footage?

Yes. When you enter measurements in feet, the lawn area is reported in square feet. This is often referred to as lawn square footage or lawn size.

Can I use this result for a mowing quote?

Yes, as a starting point. A mowing price may also depend on obstacles, slope, trimming, edging, travel, crew size, equipment, frequency, and your own production rate and pricing.
