How do I calculate how many drywall sheets I need?
Add the net square footage of the surfaces, apply the extra-material percentage you choose, divide by the square-foot coverage of one sheet, and round up to a whole sheet. This calculator handles those steps across all completed surfaces.
How many square feet are in a 4 × 8 drywall sheet?
A 4 × 8 ft sheet has 32 sq ft of face area. A 4 × 10 ft sheet has 40 sq ft, and a 4 × 12 ft sheet has 48 sq ft. The calculator also lets you enter a custom sheet size.
Should I subtract doors and windows?
Subtract the measured opening area when you want it excluded from your drywall square footage. The calculator does not assume a standard door or window size and does not decide which openings should be deducted.
Does the calculator choose a drywall waste percentage?
No. Extra material varies with layout, cuts, damage, offcut reuse, and other job conditions. Enter the allowance that fits your own takeoff and job.
Does the calculated sheet count include cut layout?
No. The result is based on total square footage, sheet coverage, and your extra-material allowance. Actual cut layout can require additional sheets even when the total purchased square footage appears sufficient.
