Estimate cleaning labor hours

Enter the area you expect to clean and the production rate you use for this type of work.

1. Job and production inputs

The production rate should reflect your own expected or observed work rate for the service.

sq ft

sq ft/labor hr

Square feet cleaned per labor hour. Use a rate that fits this job and service level.

Base cleaning labor hours = cleanable area ÷ your production rate. The calculator does not supply a default production rate.

2. Crew and additional labor

Add crew size to estimate elapsed job time. Extra labor is optional.

Number of workers sharing the estimated labor.

worker-min

Combined worker-minutes for non-area work such as setup, supply handling, or other tasks. Example: 2 workers × 15 minutes = 30 worker-minutes.

Used only to estimate a finish time from the calculated crew duration.

3. Estimated labor and job duration

Results update automatically when all required inputs are valid.

Base cleaning labor hours Cleanable area ÷ production rate
Additional labor hours Optional worker-minutes ÷ 60
Estimated total labor hours Total worker-hours required for the job
Estimated job duration Total labor hours ÷ crew size
Estimated crew time in minutes Approximate elapsed time for the full crew
Estimated finish time Enter a planned start time to calculate.

Enter cleanable area, your production rate, and crew size to estimate labor hours.

This is a planning estimate, not a production-rate standard, staffing requirement, quote, or guarantee. Estimated job duration assumes the labor can be shared evenly across the crew. Estimated finish time assumes continuous work and does not account for breaks, shift limits, or multi-day scheduling. Actual cleaning time can vary with facility layout, service scope, soil level, equipment, access, traffic, restrooms, floor type, and other job conditions.

How to estimate commercial cleaning labor hours

  1. Enter only the square footage you expect the crew to clean.
  2. Enter your own production rate in square feet per labor hour for that job or service level.
  3. Add any extra worker-minutes for non-area tasks you want included in total labor.
  4. Enter the crew size to convert total labor hours into estimated elapsed job time.
  5. Optionally add a start time to estimate when the crew may finish.

Core formula

Base labor hours = cleanable square feet ÷ production rate

Total labor hours = base labor hours + additional worker-minutes ÷ 60

Estimated job duration = total labor hours ÷ crew size

Commercial cleaning labor hours calculator using your production rate

Production rate is commonly expressed as the square footage one worker can clean per labor hour. Dividing cleanable square footage by that rate gives the base labor hours for the work. This calculator keeps the production rate editable instead of choosing a facility benchmark for you.

Use the result as a starting point for commercial cleaning workloading, staffing discussions, or a labor-based estimate. It can also be used for janitorial work when you already know the production rate you want to use. If a site includes time that does not scale with floor area, such as setup or other fixed tasks, add those worker-minutes separately.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate cleaning labor hours from square footage?

Divide the cleanable square footage by your production rate in square feet per labor hour. For example, 12,000 square feet ÷ 3,000 square feet per labor hour = 4 labor hours before any additional labor time.

What is a cleaning production rate?

A production rate describes how much work can be completed in a unit of labor time. In this calculator, it means square feet cleaned per labor hour.

Does the calculator provide a recommended production rate?

No. Production rates vary by service scope, facility conditions, equipment, and work methods. Enter your own expected or observed rate for the job.

What is the difference between labor hours and job duration?

Labor hours measure total worker time. Job duration estimates elapsed clock time when that labor is shared evenly across the crew. Four labor hours with a two-person crew equals about two hours of job duration.

What should I include in additional labor time?

Use it for worker time that you want included but that is not represented by the square-foot production rate. Enter combined worker-minutes across the crew, such as setup, supply handling, or other fixed tasks.

What if different areas or tasks have different production rates?

Estimate each area or task group separately using the production rate that fits that work, then add the labor hours together. Use a blended production rate only when it reasonably represents the full job.

Can I use this estimate to price a cleaning job?

You can use estimated labor hours as one input in your own pricing process, but this tool does not calculate wages, overhead, profit margin, taxes, or a market price.

Do you store the numbers I enter?
